Important Information for NEW Florida residents.
Unfortunately, it seems every day we are encountering more and more natural weather events that cause prolonged power disruptions. Florida residents that have lived here for several or many years have experience with these prolonged power disruptions. New residents to Florida may not be sure how to cope with these power disruption events.
One of the first things that is considered is a portable generator and it may be powered by gasoline or propane. Here are a few things to keep in mind about that decision.
A) Storing or having enough fuel to last for more than a few hours.
B) Starting a portable generator that has not been running for some time without fuel stabilizer or regular maintenance. Don’t wait till the last minute to test and run the device.
C) Running a portable generator for long periods. Some generators will not be able to run continuously as you might wish for, and they should be stopped and cooled down before re-fueling.
D) Noise and exhaust pollution. Too many people each season are killed from Carbon Monoxide poisoning from using a portable generator improperly. Noise is a factor if you are trying to sleep and if it’s positioned away from your house but close to a fence line then perhaps your neighbor won’t be happy.
E) Weight and Size factors are important to keep in mind. If its large it may be difficult to move about and if it’s too large and you need to keep it outside, how will you secure it from theft and keep it out of the rain?
F) This is perhaps one of the MOST important considerations. Older models especially and some newer models do not have PURE SINE WAVE output. If you try and use a generator that has Modified Sine Wave or Square Wave and not Pure Sine Wave output, then you might burn up or damage any sensitive electronic devices.
G) Single Phase or Split Phase output? 110 volt or 220 volt or both. What type of power do you require? A well pump and a computer will have different power needs. Can your generator handle these voltage requirements?
These are some more considerations, but these are the most likely issues.
If a fossil fuel portable generator is not your ideal solution, then consider using a solar energy powered portable power station.
These types of solutions can be used year-round at home or at the beach or camping. They are clean and quiet and reliable. The only fuel they require is free sunlight.
Various types and various sizes are available, and some come with up to a 10-year warranty.
